Starting from Dhulikhel, a traditional Newari town with spectacular Himalayan views and rich history, it ascends through lush forests, terracing farmland, and small villages in tradition to the top. The highlight in this hike, however, will be the attainment of Namo Buddha, one of the holiest places of Buddhist pilgrimage in Nepal, a site of great historic and spiritual significance in Buddhism. According to legend, this is the place where, in one of the previous lives, Lord Buddha, then a prince, selflessly offered his body to a hungry tigress and her starving cubs at this very spot. The main monastery-Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery-is a place of quiet refuge, where the monks chant and one can literally soak in an aura of tranquility.

Itinerary

A 1.5-hour drive from Kathmandu by private vehicle to Dhulikhel-what a scenic countryside drive with views of the terraced farms, rural villages, and the feeling of being out in the country. Dhulikhel is an historic Newari town, famous for its traditional architecture, artistic temples, and panoramic mountain views. Your guide will provide a short intro to the town and the days hike upon arrival.

The hike from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha is graded as a moderate hike and takes about 3 to 4 hours. The trail ascends gradually through:

  • Dense pine forests for cool natural surroundings
  • Terrace farms, which border the surrounding villages that grow rice, maize, and vegetables

Ancient Stupa, at the exact spot where Buddha sacrificed himself for the starving tigress; Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, an active Buddhist monastery where monks engage in daily prayers and rituals; Prayer Flags and Mani Walls create a serene and meditative atmosphere.

Here, you can explore the monastery, light butter lamps, and meditate for a while. The monks are quite friendly, and you may have the chance to interact with them to learn more about Buddhist teachings and practices.

Enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch featuring Nepali and Tibetan delicacies such as dal bhat, momo, or thukpa at one of the local cafes or a monastery guesthouse. This quiet environment is great for rest and contemplation.

Later in the afternoon, take some time to explore, capture some great shots of the monastery, prayer flags, and Himalayan views, or soak yourself with tranquil spiritual energy in Namo Buddha.

You won’t be trekking back down; instead, you will have a private vehicle waiting to bring you back to Kathmandu. It is about 2 hours of drive through some lovely villages, terraced farmland, and scenic landscapes.

You are then dropped at your hotel in Kathmandu and thus completes this day’s trek full of spiritual enlightenment.
